Loren hard at work...turning out another carving

How long have you been involved in carving? How did you get started?

For over 65 years…I made my own toys from scraps of wood because there wasn't any extra money for toy during or after the great depression.

How long have you been a member of North Iowa Woodcarvers Guild? Do you belong to any other clubs?

Since 1986 and a charter member of the the North Iowa Woodcarver's Guild. I also belong to the Mid America Woodcarvers Club in Omaha.

Have you taken any special classes or seminars? If so, what has been your most memorable carving experience?

Yes…Learning to carve the face…especially the eyes and the profile.

What is your favorite carving technique?

Gouge carving …or any way you can make the piece of wood come to life.

What do you like most about woodcarving?

Working with young people and seeing the expression their face when they bring their carving to life…I have taught beginning woodcarving at the Titonka, IA. Middle School 2 yrs. For 6-7-8 graders.

Do you have any other interesting hobbies or interests?

Working with and caring for my horses, and, of course, drinking coffee with my friends

Do you have any advice or thoughts for other carvers?

Learn techniques from other carvers and you will develop your own style…Take seminars when ever you can.

On a personal note: Loren has been very instrumental in the success of the North Iowa Woodcarvers Guild….and has also taught many seminars on subjects ranging from pack mules and cowboys to witches at many places including Waldorf Woodcarving Weekend in Forest City, IA. and classes at Audubon, IA. Thanks Loren
